Dublin High students place fifth, get $2,500 in ‘Got Milk?’ videomaking contest

DUBLIN — Dublin High students who were among 10 finalists in a “Got Milk?” video contest ended up fifth in online voting, winning $2,500 for their school’s art program.

The Dublin entry was one of eight videos that won a $2,500 runners-up prize, contest officials announced Monday.

The $20,000 top prize went to Santa Susana High in Simi Valley, with the $10,000 second place prize going to the Pioneer Technical Center in Madera.

The winners were determined by online voting, which ran about two weeks and ended Sunday. Contest officials said the Santa Susana High got almost 11,000 votes. Dublin High got about 5,000.

The Dublin team consisted of animation students with the Tri-Valley Regional Occupational Program. Members included seniors James Genzale, Matt Pecota and Drake Schullerts, and junior Angela Tran. Some other students also did work.

The winning video, which uses actors on a stage, can be seen at http://www.milkquarious.com/#/winner.

The video by the Dublin students is an animated piece titled “Love in Milkquarious.” It can be found at YouTube.com by using the search words “milkquarious and Dublin High.”

The contest was sponsored by the California Milk Processor Board. Students age 14 to 18 who attend California public high schools were eligible to enter the contest from Oct. 5 to Dec. 20. They were asked to recreate one of the scenes from “White Gold’s Battle for Milkquarious,” a 20-minute “rock opera” video on the site, and to submit their entries online. The video is about main character White Gold’s quest to save his hometown of Milkquarious from a potentially deadly milk shortage. Judges picked the nine finalists, with the 10th decided by “people’s choice” through a popular vote online. About 100 groups entered.

Misheloffs preparing for 21-year anniversary of daughter’s abduction

DUBLIN — Maddi and Mike Misheloff never wanted or sought attention, but they need it.

Since their daughter Ilene, then 13, was kidnapped off the streets of Dublin 21 years ago, they have needed to keep her name in the spotlight.

On Thursday, for the 21st time, the Misheloff will participate in an annual vigil organized by family and friends to keep Ilene’s name fresh in the minds of the public with the hope that it will spark a tip.

The Misheloffs will walk with between 100 and a few hundred people along the route from Wells Middle School to St. Raymond Catholic Church — approximately the same route Ilene took when she was headed to the Dublin Iceland rink for lessons after school Jan. 30, 1989.

“It’s excruciatingly painful,” said Maddi Misheloff about the vigil. “Our purpose is to do this every year until we have her back to let people know that we are still looking.”

An added burden hangs over this year’s vigil. Maddi lost her father in 2009, shortly after Jaycee Dugard walked into a Concord police station.

When the Dugard case broke in August, it thrust the Misheloffs’ story and Ilene’s name back into the headlines. The case of Dugard, who was abducted from the Lake Tahoe area 18 years ago and was found alive and living in Antioch, sparked hundreds of leads for the Misheloffs.
