Wheels Celebrates 25 Years
of Keeping the Tri-Valley Moving
Special Rider Appreciation Promotions Mark Wheels’ 25th Anniversary

Livermore, CA – September 15, 2011 Wheels is celebrating our 25th Anniversary this year with two special rider appreciation promotions during the month of October 2011. From October 3-9, 2011, Wheels will roll back fares to 50¢, the fare when the service launched in 1986. Wheels is also encouraging all riders, past and present, to enter the “Trip Tales” story contest on the topic of “What Wheels Has Meant to Me” for a chance to win two free Raider tickets and many other prizes, courtesy of KKIQ 101.7 radio and Wheels!

“Over the past twenty-five years, Wheels has become a vital and integral part of the Tri-Valley’s transportation network, providing safe, reliable and affordable service to the thousands of residents, commuters, and visitors who use it every day,” said Dublin Councilmember Kasie Hildenbrand, Chair of the LAVTA Board of Directors. “We are thankful for the support we have received over the years from our cities, our customers and our community.”
50¢ Roll Back Fare Promotion To thank the thousands of riders who have made Wheels a regular part of their lives, Wheels will roll back fares to 50¢ from October 3-9, 2011 on fixed-route buses. The fixed-route senior/disabled fare will be 25¢ and the Dial-A-Ride fare will be $1.00.

Trip Tales Contest
Thousands of Tri-Valley residents have grown up with Wheels and have made our service a regular part of their lives. Some have fond memories of taking the bus to school, to the County Fair and many look forward to seeing their favorite bus operator every day. Passengers, past and present, are asked to send in their stories through October 28 about how Wheels has helped them over the years or an amusing anecdote that happened while they were riding Wheels. Wheels staff will select the top 25 stories in total, one for each year of operation, and prizes will be awarded weekly to five winning authors. Winning entries will be entered into the final contest for the grand prize – two Raiders tickets courtesy of KKIQ 101.7 radio! The winning stories will be published, without names or contact information, in a special publication that will be available on Wheels buses and website.

For weekly prizes and contest information, visit us online at www.wheelsbus.com, call our customer service number at 925-455-7500 or pick up information at any Tri-Valley public library.

ACFD Fire Chief Named 2011 Fire Chief of the Year

ACFD Fire Chief Named 2011 Fire Chief of the Year
Chief Gilbert Receives Prestigious Award from the California Fire Chiefs Association

Riverside, CA—On Tuesday, September 27, 2011, Alameda County Fire Department (ACFD) Fire Chief Sheldon Gilbert was announced as the Ronny Jack Coleman Fire Chief of the Year by the California Fire Chiefs Association (CFCA) during its annual conference in Riverside.

Named after retired State Fire Marshal Ronny Jack Coleman, the CFCA Ronny Jack Coleman Fire Chief of the Year Award was created in 2000 to recognize an outstanding member of the fire service leadership community. With a membership that spans throughout California’s 58 counties, the award highlights an individual that is a role model for all fire chiefs in the state.

“Chief Gilbert’s demonstration of creativity, dynamic leadership in challenging economic times and sound vision has benefited the California fire service as a whole,” said CFCA President and ACFD Deputy Chief, Demetrious Shaffer. “This prestigious award puts him in an elite group of fire chiefs who have made a significant impact on the California fire service’s ability to meet the unique risks and challenges that are present within California.”

Annually, CFCA members nominate and vote for fire chiefs who have displayed exemplary performance in training and education, fire service leadership and management, fire prevention, and community involvement. The Ronny Jack Coleman Fire Chief of the Year Award is given to the Fire Chief that has exemplified the highest level of leadership and innovation resulting in contributions that have significantly enhanced the California fire service. This award is held by only a few fire chiefs and places Chief Gilbert amongst an exclusive group of chiefs who have been selected in the state.

“I am incredibly honored, humbled and thankful to receive this award from the California Fire Chiefs Association,” said CFCA Past-President and Alameda County Fire Chief Sheldon Gilbert. “I will do my best to live up to what the award is all about and continue the work of the amazing individuals who have received this award before me.”
