Season of Ribbon Cuttings

I know that we’re officially headed into the Holiday Season, but recently it has been more like the Season of Ribbon Cuttings in the City of Dublin. In fact, I’ve had the privilege of participating in six of them in the past six weeks, all of which were for very exciting, high-profile destinations opening in our City. When one considers that the preceeding two months also saw the ribbon-cutting for the Sprouts Farmers Market in the old Circuit City building along with the ribbon-cutting of the 580 Executive Office Center, it is definitely an exciting time in Dublin

The most recent wave of openings kicked off with the much-anticipated new Target to open as part of the Fallon Gateway Shopping Center. As exciting as that was, the ribbon cutting for Johnny Garlic’s on October 10th was even more thrilling, as it included a special cooking lesson from Guy Fieri himself, as he was putting me to work in the kitchen making some Pizza Margherita. This was followed by a special gala event to support fighting Childrens’ Diabetis. Another great cause to celebrate in October with a ribbon cutting was the School of Imagination, located near the intersection of Dublin Blvd and Schaefer Road. The month was rounded out by the ribbon-cutting of the new REI on Amador Plaza Road in downtown Dublin.

In November, I was able to be part of the ribbon-cutting for the new Tri-Valley YMCA facility which relocated into a 14,000 square foot facility on Sierra Court to accommodate people of all ages. Last week, I was able to cut the ribbon for the new Sports Authority, located in the old Mervyn’s building. The line to get in literally wrapped all of the way around the building. Although I wasn’t able to attend the official grand opening, I was also excited that Vito’s Pizzeria opened its doors in Grafton Station this month.

Some exciting expansions and openings to look forward to in early 2012 include Taleo adding hundreds of employees and taking over all of building 4140 at the Dublin Corporate Center, while Fluor also expands its presence along with Epicor into an adjacent building to put the occupancy of the business park at 90%. I’m also excited that Valley Care is opening an Urgent Care facility at the Dublin Gateway Medical Center, while Palo Alto Medical Foundation expands as well.

Hometown Heroes Event

Now an annual event, the Dublin Senior Center hosted the Hometown Heroes Celebration to honor all our past veterans this past Sunday. By all accounts, the event was very well received with a record crowd of 160 attendees! The Celebration was led by myself and I spoke of my admiration for past and present veterans and their families. New Camp Parks Commander, Lieutenant Colonel David James also spoke to the audience and introduced and recognized each branch of the military. The event was capped off by a stellar one-hour performance by the 191st Army Band – the “Band of the Wild West.” The event was free to the public and refreshments were served at the end of the day.

Residental Brokers/Sales Agents Roundtable

Thursday morning, the Economic Development Ad-Hoc Committee (myself and Councilmember Biddle) hosted our second Residential Roundtable to reach the sales offices and agents that represent properties in Dublin. We provided an overview on the development activities occurring in Dublin and then David Stark, the Public Affairs Director for BayEast, provided a presentation on the sales activity in the Tri-Valley market over the past year in comparison to the historical averages. This was followed by a robust discussion of today’s housing market and the driving forces behind home sales – relocations from the South Bay, as well as those seeking better schools for their kids (just a couple of examples). The group was extremely appreciative of the City for seeking their feedback and input on housing and hope to continue to keep this dialogue going in the future. Staff will be looking at opportunities to consolidate existing information into a format that is easily accessible to agents, sales people and future residents.
