Changes at the East County Animal Shelter
Effective June 27, 2010, Alameda County discontinued operation of the Fairmont Animal Shelter as a County cost saving measure and moved all animals previously housed at that facility to the East County Animal Shelter (ECAS) in Dublin. ECAS is jointly owned by the cities of Dublin, Livermore, and Pleasanton and Alameda County with operations provided through an memorandum of understanding with the Sheriff’s Office. Over the past few months the shelter owners have been in discussions with the Sheriff’s Office to extend the existing MOU which expired on June 30, 2010.
The shelter owners feel that it was important to understand the full impact of this operational change before committing to a new agreement. At a meeting on July 23rd, the shelter owners and Sheriff’s Office agreed to continue operations under the expired MOU for the next several months. During that time the Sheriff’s Office will collect expanded data on the shelter operations, including quality of service information, to help identify short and long-term impacts to operations and costs. At the end of six months, the shelter owners will review the data with the Sheriff’s Office and decide how to proceed.
