Free Ride Promotion Extended on the New Tri-Valley Rapid Bus Service

Ride the Rapid Free Now thru February 11, 2011

LIVERMORE, CA – January 31, 2011— Tri-Valley residents are finding out that sometimes there IS such a thing as a “free ride.”

Today, the Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority (LAVTA) announced the extension of its’ free trial period on the RAPID which now runs through February 11, 2011. The three-week long free ride promotion was established to gain new riders and encourage current Wheels riders to try the new service. The Rapid connects passengers to places such as the Stoneridge Mall, BART, the Lawrence Livermore and Sandia National Laboratories and points in between.

The new, faster service features fewer stops and more frequent service than traditional routes and uses advanced technology to provide speedier trips through the 14-mile corridor. Major features include:

  • Rapid buses arriving every 10 minutes during the busy morning and afternoon commute times to maximize convenience
  • Transit signal priority which allows buses to get through traffic signals faster
  • New, modern bus shelters with electronic signs that tell riders when the next bus will be arriving

The Rapid buses and bus stops are identified by a distinctive design and logo and feature bus shelters, benches, trash and recycling receptacles and bicycle racks for those who would like to bike a portion of their commute.

In addition to improved service and comfort, the Rapid reduces the impact on the environment by decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption through the use of clean hybrid electric buses.

“I encourage residents to take advantage of the free fares to give the new Rapid service a try. I believe they will find it a fast and convenient alternative to the stress and expense of driving a car with eco-friendly benefits, and will consider using it more often after the trial period ends,” said Scott Haggerty, Alameda County Supervisor and LAVTA chair.
