Heritage Park - 4th of July Celebration
I was celebrated Independence Day with an “Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social” at the Dublin Heritage Park and Museums last Saturday, July 3rd. The event kicked-off with an Uncle Sam on stilts leading a procession of patriotically decorated strollers, wheelchairs, bikes and scooters around the historic site.
The courtyard of old St. Raymond’s Church was filled with children learning how to make ice cream the old fashioned way, with just three ingredients (cream, sugar and vanilla) and then turning the crank device and tasting the real thing. They also squeezed lemons using an old fashioned press and made their own lemonade.
Behind the church, children did laundry using a scrub board, bar of brown soap and a washtub and then hung it on a line to dry. We learned that old fashioned games never go out of style as children rolled hoops, played marbles, bobbed for apples, played checkers and participated in a messy pie eating contest. Visitors of all ages enjoyed the free concert provided by the Dublin Bluegrass Jam Band and tours of the Museum.
The Ice Cream Social was truly a community event with approximately 400 attendees and a few dozen volunteers providing over 200 volunteer hours. The Dublin Lions Club (who grilled hot dogs and hamburgers), the Boy Scouts and the Dublin Historical Preservation Association provided a great deal of support and manpower to make the day a great success.
