Operation “SCOOT” is a success

On Tuesday, January 26, 2010, the Dublin Police Services Crime Prevention Unit completed Operation ‘SCOOT’ at the Amador Lakes Apartment Complex. This operation, in cooperation with the Lakes Management, and in conjunction with the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program, was designed to deter and reduce crimes of opportunity by proactively educating the residents through personal contact and communication. The four person team canvassed the complex parking lot and identified vehicles that were a potential target for burglaries and theft. Vehicles with valuable articles visible inside were identified and the registered owners were contacted. The owners were informed of the necessity to remove or conceal all valuables when securing their cars in order to reduce their chances of becoming crime victims. Additionally, the team contacted residents, answered questions, disseminated informational bulletins, and impressed upon them the importance of protecting themselves and their property from avoidable thefts. During the operation, the unit identified 43 potential target vehicles, contacted 16 of those registered owners within the complex, and spoke to 27 other residents. The operation was very well received by all residents contacted. The Dublin Police Crime Prevention Unit intends to hold similar operations at other locations throughout the City on a regular basis.
