Target plans new Dublin store
Target Stores has bought land in eastern Dublin for a new store, city officials said late Thursday, in a deal that extends its recent expansion — and could foreshadow more local growth for the retailer.
Earlier this year, Target disclosed it had acquired sites in Oakland and San Jose for stores. All three of the stores, including the future site in Dublin, should open in 2011.
“This is huge for Dublin,” said Linda Maurer, the city’s economic development director.
Target’s future store in East Dublin will be the primary anchor for a new retail center in the Tri-Valley. Target already has a store in Dublin’s traditional downtown district on the west side of town.
“We’re thrilled that Target has the confidence in this market that they can operate two stores in Dublin,” Maurer said.
The retailer bought 10 acres of land near the northwest corner of the Interstate 580-Fallon Road interchange. The purchase was completed Monday, according to Terranomics, a commercial realty brokerage that arranged the deal.
The new store will be about 130,000 square feet and could have about 250 workers.
Target’s longtime Dublin store will remain open. The retailer also has stores in Livermore and San Ramon.
“We felt the Tri-Valley could support another Target store,” said Matthew Kircher, a managing partner with Terranomics.
Kircher represents Target in its efforts to secure new store locations in the Bay Area and nearby regions.Minneapolis-based Target isn’t talking about the future stores.
The retailer says its policy is to avoid talking about stores that might be scheduled to open more than a year from the current date.
The three new stores appear to mark a significant expansion for the retailer.
Target’s Oakland site will involve expanding an existing 117,000-square-foot building in the East Bay Bridge Shopping Center, which straddles the Oakland-Emeryville border.
Target intends to create a 140,000-square-foot building through the expansion.
In San Jose, Target is planning a 180,000-square-foot store, Kircher said. Construction is under way on the North San Jose parcel, which is along State Route 237.
The new stores could be the vanguard of more activity by the retailer. Target has begun to scout for more retail sites. It has at least two more locations in mind.
“Target is pretty active in the Bay Area,” Kircher said. “Northern California is a good market for Target. The customers there are the kind of people they like to market to.” Kircher said.
