Bike to Work Day a Huge Success
With each passing year, it is exciting to see the growth in the East Bay Bicycle Coaltion’s annual “Bike to Work” Day on May 13th. I proudly participated in this year’s event and was happy that the City of Dublin could once again be one of the sponsors. Dublin Cyclery was also one of the primary sponsors, and representatives from both the City and the Dublin Cyclery were at our official “Energizer Station” at the BART Station Thursday morning handing out t-shirts, goodie bags, and refreshments to all those who rode their bikes. Special thanks also goes to Councilmember Don Biddle and Erin Steffen from our Staff in making it such a success. It was great seeing so many residents and City staffers take part.
As a participant in the one-day event two years ago, it has slowly began to change my habits, which is one of the event’s main goals. Since my initial participation, I have decided recently to try commute more using my bicycle. My goal is to replace one commute trip in my car each week by riding my bike instead. Although this is a modest goal, I have noticed a general improvement in my level of health and fitness from this simple action. I have also saved some money on gas, and have done a small bit in my corner of the world to help reduce green house gas emissions. One of the things I have noticed was how much busier our trails and bike paths are as of late. More and more residents are in fact choosing cycling as an alternative means of transportation, and while we may not be completely giving up our reliance on cars any time soon, every little bit helps.
