Fighting H1N1 and Other Health Pandemics
The Tri-Valley City Councils held their quarterly dinner on Thursday, and the primary topic of conversation was H1N1 and other health pandemics. The Alameda County Public Health Department gave an excellent presentation on the overall risks and containment strategies, and we discussed the importance of regional coordination and cooperation on fighting H1N1 and other outbreaks. After a detailed analysis, it was noted that although H1N1 is a serious matter, the media has perhaps overstated the risks. We need to avoid panicking and remain calm. The most important thing that was stressed was simply to use “common sense.” If we do basic things such as washing out hands regularly, coughing into our sleeves, staying home when we’re sick, etc. it was noted that we will do far more to fight disease than any flu shots or drastic actions could ever accomplish.
